Morigon District at a Glance

The Brahmaputra River borders Morigaon District to the north and shares boundaries with Karbi Anglong District to the south, Nagaon District to the east, and Kamrup (Metro) District to the west. The district is characterized by fertile alluvial plains interlaced with a network of rivers including the Killing, Kollong and Kapili.

The landscape is scenic, offering views of the Himalayan range on clear days and lush tropical forests in the hilly regions. Morigaon is also home to the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, famous for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

Morigaon has a rich historical background associated with rulers such as Arimatta and his son Jongalbalahu. The district was carved out as a separate district from Nagaon on 29th September, 1989.

Features of the District

  • Educational and Human Development Status: According to the State Human Development Report (2003), Morigaon ranks fourth among districts in terms of Human Development Index (HDI).
  • Demographic and Rural Characteristics: Morigaon is predominantly rural with approximately 92.3% of its population residing in villages, highlighting its strong cultural heritage and scenic environment.

The rural composition highlights the need for context-specific educational strategies, community-based interventions and school-centric developmental programmes, particularly at the foundational and elementary stages.

Livelihood and Socio-economic Context

The livelihoods of the majority of the population are rooted in agriculture, allied activities and forest-based livelihoods. This underscores the importance of integrating locally relevant, skill-based and experiential learning approaches within teacher education and school curricula.
